My computer has been working fine and last night I ran Norton 360. Virus scan, reg fix, temp files deleted. I've had this for several years and never had a problem. This morning I went to play a game and my save was gone. I went to My documents/my games and not only the saves are gone but the folders for the various games are gone. I tried playing Civ 4-Beyond The Sword this morning and that folder is there, but no saves. It's also the only folder in /my games. Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, and a few others are completely gone. I did a system restore from around 1am this morning and the saves are still gone.

Hi The WobMob. You can give Recuva 1.48.982 a shot and see if you can restore the save files using that program.

No, it didn't find any of the old files.

Did you backup your game save files to external media before the files were gone from your hard drive?

No. I started the games over again and am making sure I back them up to one of my usb drives this time.
I'm just curious as to how this happened. I mean, everything in the MY Games folder was gone.

That is rather strange. Did anyone else have access to your computer? It is possible that when you cleaned the registry and removed temporary files, you could have inadvertently removed those save game files without realizing it.

Yes, that would be my guess too, specially if you are using 3rd party software to clean temp files. They may not warn you sufficient that you are going to delete saved games.

That's what I initially thought as well. I've used Norton for years and never had an issue. First time for everything I guess. Is there a safe way to clean temp files and the registry? I know it's risky playing with the reg but I install/uninstall programs and sometimes find bits of them sticking around. I know Windows has the option to clean temp files, recycle bin, etc. but I just found it more convenient to run the antivirus, file cleaner, reg cleaner all at once.
Well, I'm making sure to back up the folder from now on and don't think I'll use Norton for anything by virus scanning.

The safe way of cleaning the registry is to not mess with it at all. Cleaning the registry isn't necessary and there are many topics on the Internet about the dangers of registry cleaning especially if you do not know what you are doing with regards to what entries can be removed.

If you want to remove temporary files safely then run the Disk Cleanup Utility or ATF Cleaner.

Anytime you cleanup temporary files, or make any changes to your computer, its important to backup up your important data as you never know when something like this could cause your data to disappear. Live and learn. ;)
