Hi All, ............. After the installation of a new mother board it became apparent that I cannot get the disk configuration that I would like to have; namely, two hard drives and a CD drive. A computer tech told me that I could connect to the CD drive by using one of the SATA sockets to the pin connectors on the CD drive.

The existing working arrangement now is CD to a hard drive to the MB socket. I'm trying to use HD1 to HD2 to the MB socket and the CD to the SATA socket.

So far I've checked Newegg and Tigerdirect and don't see the cable I need, the CD to SATA socket. Is such a cable available and will the method work?

How many IDE channels on the MB?
What kind of drives & cd are they? IDE or SATA?

TonyT, ............ All the drives are IDE. Probably I did not use the correct naming in my search for a cable. Again, excuse my weakness with the nomenclature, what I was calling sockets, I think you are calling "IDE channels." If that is right, the motherboard has only one IDE channel. And that is the problem, there is not sufficient IDE channels to accommodate the configuration of two hard drives plus the CD drive. If the computer tech mentioned in my first post is correct, I can use one of the SATA channels to connect the CD drive to the motherboard. Thank you for your interest and support.

Certainly if the CD drive is a SATA drive, otherwise there are adaptors available, e.g. .....

A Google for 'PATA to SATA adapters' brings up a load of hits.

NOTE: I have no experience of these adaptors whatsoever :)

Edit - I see it is an IDE drive.

I think its better to buy a cheap PATA PCI card & disable the ATA port on the motherboard.

I have never used these adapters nor have I heard anyone of using them.

I use a Vantec CB-IS100 adapter on a Sony IDE dvd drive (840a).
Works great, haven't noticed a difference.

You can find it just about anywhere at widely varying prices - Newegg, Ebay probaly least expensive (around $15.00).

You'll need a Sata data cable.

If connect the IDE CD drive to a sata port using an adapter, verify that you can boot the computer from a CD, else will run into difficulties down the line when reinstalling or using repair boot CDs.

    My choice would be:
    1. use a PCI PATA card.
    2. use a PATA to SATA adapter.

In either case I would connect the operating system drive w/ jumper set to master and the CD w/ jumper set to slave slave on the MB IDE channel. And connect the secondary hard drive w/ jumper set to CS to the PCI card or sata port.

    IMPORTANT-
if get a PCI card to add an extra IDE channel carefully read the specifications. Make sure it supports DMA modes. Some of the inexpensive ones support PIO only.

Drive with IDE-SATA adapter should be recognized in Bios – no software installation – and can boot from it.
If use adapter see nothing wrong with the 2 HD’s on 1 ide channel (master, slave) and the cd/dvd on a Sata – certainly simplifies cabling.

Hi All, .......... Thank you to those who replied. I'm staying with the cable approach. PeteC The item you suggested is out of stock so I'm going to order the Vantecc CB-IS100 that ephemarial recommended. A review of Newgg's discussion on this adapter indicates that it has worked well in similar applications. Again thank you; I appreciate your support.
