I have a Dell Mini 10 notebook running XP Home. My wife wants to use it occasionally, and I want to insure it's safe when online. I have the following programs installed:

avast! AV - set to update automatically
Malwarebytes Pro - set to update automatically
    Open DNS
    Open DNS Crypt

My gut tells me that this is protection enough from the bad guys, but I want to be sure. We rarely, if ever, make use of unsecured hot spots (coffee shops, etc.). The machine doesn't have the horsepower to run Win7 (1GB RAM, not upgradable).

Am I safe? Or should I look at other options?

What you have is good. XP will not be immune from the bad guys. I wouldn't do any banking or other things that require things like credit cards etc. No support on XP from M$ means that the hackers and malware people will/could have a field day with XP. Everyday surfing would be OK. Do you have recovery disc's for it just in case?

Makes one wonder about the many ATM's that still use XP.

Saw an news release on this a week or so ago. Many of them have updated. Didn't say how many, but it was quite a lot of them.

Monitor your bank and credit statements closely. Better yet, setup transactional monitoring, (all transactions send you an email and/or text message immediately).
