    Using a new laptop, running XP, IE 6.0. Out of the blue, when starting IE, get the followng error message:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    Runtime Error

    Program C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

    abnormal program termination

    I cannot get past this screen! Any ideas out there?

    I don't know whether you've solved the problem yet or of a specific solution to your problem, but running IE repair tool might do it. Just access it from the control panel as if you were going to uninstall IE.

    Hope that helps!

    Runtime error

    Problem was caused by a third-party piece of spyware called Common Name! Had used the programme for a while, had no idea it was spyware, until alerted to that fact by someone on the Microsoft User forum. Deelting the programme solved the problem immediately! A valuable lesson for me - and a warning to those who trust seemingly innocuous, "useful" tools!
    Thanks for the tip, all the same.
