I use Vista Ultimate X64 and have a piece on engineering software that will not work with it. I really don't want to install XP onto the Vista machine. Does anyone know if it is possible to install XP onto a USB drive (flash or otherwise) and actually run XP from that drive? I was considering one of those newer micro USB HDD @ 8-12GB - would be more than enough for XP, engineering software, and all data files.

You'd be Much better off by adding a second internal drive...It'll run much faster...

How to install all of Windows XP on a flash drive

An ideal way of recovering Windows XP would be if you could run a complete copy of it from a USB flash drive. The following free tutorial tells you how to do it.

"WinUSB is a tutorial which allows the user to run a complete Windows XP version on an USB device/stick. This tutorial is some kind of manual which you have to follow, in order to let your modified Windows XP run on your USB device. Therefor you have to regard some requirerments which are also important to the avoidance of any infringment of the copyright of microsoft. You only have to click on the tutorial menu-button in order to read more...

"Copyright advice: "The following tutorial requires a valid licenced copy of Windows XP. Microsoft does not authorize the owners of Windows XP licences to run the licensed Windows version on more than one computer at a time. The registration of Windows XP also prevents running Windows XP on multiple systems. Due to that, you are allowed to use your licenced copy of Windows XP on only one computer. That does not prevent the use of WinUSB on another computer after shutting down the first system."

    Thanks Steve,
I was afraid that I would end up having to do that, but I was looking for a way out. This engineering software must be licensed to a particular computer, therefore I can't afford to have it on all 3 of my PC's that I use at various times. That's one reason I was hoping to put XP and the software on a flash type of drive and have the ease of portability associated with it. I do have external USB HDD's, but they are a little too bulky to just pick up and take with me.

I guess I'll just have to resort to being tethered to one PC. Thanks

Steve, you're right. I didn't even think of that.

    Thanks again.
