I have XP professional. I just installed The Sims for my daughter. When she try’s to play the game she gets a message saying "please logon with an account with administrator privileges to play this game ". I don't want her the have an administrator account but I want her to be able to play her game. I also don't want to have to be present to log on as an administrator for her to do this. What's the best way to accomplish this?

    Thanks
    Jamal

Not familiar with that specific app but lots of them have an install option to 'make available to all users'. If so, I'd remove it and reinstall using that option.

If no such install option, you could give her rights to only that specific folder. You don't say if you are using FAT32 or NTFS for your file structure. NTFS will allow you to fine tune permissions and security to a much greater extent than FAT32. Since this probably won't be the only occasion when you'll need to tweak settings, if you have FAT32 now, it might be worth running the CONVERT utility to move things to NTFS.

I am using NTFS and have changed the permissions on the program to give everyone full control, no luck. This game doesn't have an instal option to make it avialable for all users. Is there a way to fool the program into thinking my daughter is an administrator when she is not? Can you set up this program to run with my account and password?

Just a wag here. Right click on the shortcut you use to run the game and choose properties. On the shortcut tab click on the advanced button.

Zander's directions will allow you to set the shortcut to run under different credentials than the logged on user. So would a right-click on the shortcut and selecting runas.

Both will allow the app to be run using your administrator account. But as far as I know, there is no way to have it done automatically and without the user knowing the account and password to use.

Thanks for the info Newt. As I said, it was just a wag. I'm the only user on this computer so I've never had any reason to try it. Oh well, was worth a try. :)

I use Runas quite a bit at work. Great tool for lots of things. One network managment app in particular needs 4 of them. I log on normally with a standard user account for a 2K AD domain. I need admin rights for this app to that same domain and so start it with a runas and a domain admin account. But there are 3 resource domains that aren't part of the main AD one and so I have to go into each one and open it with a domain admin account for the specific domain (all different). And no way I've found to automate all the setup stuff so gotta do it every time I get to work and fire up the PC.

But M$ really needs some way (or some bright person needs to find a tweak) to allow just what jamal and lots of others want/need to do and that is to be able to allow certain apps to Runas an admin account without the user seeing details.

There may even be some way to do it but I can't figure one out and lots of internet searching hasn't shown that anyone else has either. To tell the truth, I was really surprised when I first looked around and found there wasn't a simple way to do the job.
