I have a lot of slowness and disconnections.
One of the things that I am wondering about is how many things I have running. One in particular is "Ptsnoop "
I did a search on it and saw that sometimes it is a virus. I have Norton anti virus, and I ran a virus scan on "my computer ", and it found no virus.
By pushing alt+ctrl+delete right after turning on the computer, here are the things showing in the window.
    Norton system doctor
    explorer
    zonealarm
    GMT
    Cmesys
    Monwow
    csinsm32
    Realplay
    poproxy
    Loadqm
    Navapw32
    msmsgs
    stimon
    systray
    Ptsnoop
    nprotect
    csinject
    commpu
    Does anyone see anything unusual?
    Thanks

Ptsnoop is for a modem. It's not a virus. You do have some things that are bandwidth hogs. Realplayer, msmsgs. Slowness and disconnects are not always related. Startup cop is a good free program that gives you more control over what starts up when you boot. Other folks here have more info on startup programs, if you need them or not.

Ptsnoop was part of some modem driver I had once.

GMT is GAIN or Gator. Get rid of it.

The Norton SyS Doctor and Protected Recycle Bin don't really need to run unless you feel you need them, and the Real startup can certainly be eliminated.

Search for the ones you don't know and see from the program's properties what they belong to. Most look harmless, though I don't recognize a couple. The real question is whether you need all these things.

    Thanks to aleekat and Abraxas.
Please copy and paste the things running I posted and put an X by the ones I don't need, and then tell me how to get rid of them.
    I am computer illiterate.
    Thanks

Cmesys is also part of Gator!

You really really really need to do Spy/Adware cleanup!

    Spyware and adware removal

    SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run this twice delete all it finds, "ALWAYS" run this before AdAware.
Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.

    AdAware 6.0 http://www.lavasoft.com
    Run only after SpyBot!
Make sure to configure to Max settings, all files and compressed files.Delete all it finds

    BHO Demon http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
A BHO is like a autostart/startup that only runs when you run the Browser.
This program runs stand alone no install is required post me the items it finds other than the below. Normal entries here would be Acro….. (Acrobat Reader) or Nav…. (Norton Anti virus).

Deffintely get Norton System Doctor and Realplay out of the startup group.

NSD does nuttin but fight anything Windows may be doing. And is a high resource user. And I myself never saw any good from running it anyway.

Realplay is a very heavy resource user. And is also VERY NOSEY when you are on the Internet. It is online anytime you are. By just shutting it down I believe you will see quite a difference.

Some of the other items that may not be needed, I am not sure what they are.

Spybot completely slipped my mind. Once you download/install. Get connected to the net, then tools, online updates.

    Found the startup link.

    Look herre.

IF you do decide to get rid of NPROTECT do it through the properties of the Recycle Bin and be sure to also remove all protected files.

Just stopping it from loading at startup has been known to cause problems for Scandisk and/or defrag.

    I can vouch for that.

Startup Cop is about again too, it shows you every thing that is running at startup and gives you the option to disable or delete.
BillyBob will tell you I believe that he is using it as well.
    good luck.
