I want to have two programs accessing the audio board at the same time but windows 98 gives me a warning that this is not possible. I know this is possible with XP but since I am running experiments on a win98 computer I would like to run those 2 programs together. 1 program is the media encoder 7 and the other program is a stripchart recorder. I use the microphone input as a signal source.

has somebody an idea how to solve this?

    Kind regards,

    Erik

    More info....

    Hi...
Certainly it is possible.....but we really need more info (as in the sound card you have)..........

but there are a couple of solutions ....the easiest being a software mixer....also under ...

    Start > settings > control panel > multimedia ..

depending on your sound card , most have a selection for recording and playback that says "use any available device "

    Cheers

    sound card and other things

    Jake,

I have a Soundmax integrated digital audio board. integrated on the asus p4s8x-x board. (this is an audio board from digital devices)

in the settings i don't see a "use any available device ". Ofcourse I don't have an english version of windows so i don't see anything which like this.

What more do you need to know? Is this item in the audio tab of the multi media?

    regards,

    Erik

    Hi Erik...
That Motherboard has a bunch of optional Bells and whistles....when I looked at the specs all they listed was the "optional ' Audio Chipset and I could not get to the download section to see what was there for Soundmax....it would help if I knew what version of the soundmax chipset you have to see what is available for it ...one way to find out ...click..
    Start > Run >

type in "msinfo32" (without the quotes) Click Ok

then look under Componets > Multimedia

It sounds like what your after is what is known as full duplex operation (simultaneous in/out) ...if I know what version of the soundmax chipset you have we should be able to figure it out...

The default mixer that installs with Windows 98 is pretty bare bones ...in fact it's a leap of faith to call it a mixer at all ...

Anyway, see if you can get that info for us ....

    Cheers
    Jake

So no mentioning of the chipset.

When I look to the datasheet of my motherboard it mentioned: ADI AD1980 6 channel audio Codec.
    Maybe this can help you.

    Kind regards,

    Possible soluton...

    Hi Erik...

It would seem that what you have is a system that is capable of at least 6 speaker (maybe more) surround sound playback and the microphone connections double as speaker hookups depending on configuration....the help files I found where kind of sparse but it appears the configuration is handled by either a sperate "audio" applet in control panel or combined with the "sounds" applet in control panel ....if it is not there, then probably the driver package did not install properly....as if that where not enough, the microphone jack is also capable of combination headset/mic usage....

at any rate ....here is an FAQ page...a good place to start...

    http://forms.analog.com/Form_Pages/soundMax/soundMaxSupportFAQ.html

The orginal driver package is an 18 meg download available on the ASUS website...

    Cheers
    Jake
