In msconfig, there is the line which reads:

    Startup Item: NvCpl
    Command: RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
    Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I think this is the command which is causing rundll32.exe to appear in my Task Manager. I believe that this line was added after the installation of my nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 graphics card. However, since then, whenever I switch between programs using my taskbar at high speeds (just clicking between two programs continuously), either the switching is slow, or both programs' buttons on the taskbar get ''depressed''. But when I close rundll32.exe on my Task Manager, the switching between programs is very fast and smooth.

The point being, rundll32.exe is supposed to be a vital part of the operating system; but for me to use the computer comfortably I have to turn it off. Is it a plausible option? Are there any suggestions as to why this situation is caused? I'm sure many people have rundll32.exe running but are switching between programs without any problems.

You have a problem with the video routine. Not sure exactly what but the behavior isn't normal. rundll32.exe should do it's thing in calling the dll and then leave.

If you are still seeing rundll32.exe running as a process (or an application  ), something isn't right. Maybe a new driver load.

And if you can't get things working right, nVidia tech support would be in order.
