After running spyware removal I cannot open the Run dialog box from the Start Menu. I can open task manager and start new task. How do you restore the Run Command? I tried unchecking and rechecking in Start Menu options but that did not work. I have reformated my HD yesterday and installed a Nvidia GeForce MX4000 graphics card. It was working fine before the spyware removal. I have also scanned for viruses (non found) and SFC which replaced some missing/corrupt files.

None of that worked. Still not able to access the run command from the start menu.

I assume from your post that you have the Run button on the Start Menu, but that clicking on it does nothing?

If this problem occurred after you ran the spyware removal software you could use System Restore if there is a suitable point available

Otherwise - and this may sound a little drastic - as it is a fresh install of XP I would be very tempted to Repair it.

Is the Run shortcut available in your Start Menu?
If so, drag it to the desktop & select "copy here ".
Then rt click it and select Properties.
    Then view the target.
The target may be pointing to a piece of spyware that no longer exists.
This can give a clue at to what exactly needs fixing.
    or
create a new desktop shortcut and for the target use this:
    &Run
which should bring up the run dialog.

Seems to be my week for tacking something into a post that may or may not have helped. I ran a cross a way to make a script that will open the runline. The instructions are as follows:
*Open notepad.exe and copy and paste the bolded line below into it:
    CreateObject( "Shell.Application ").FileRun
*Click on notepads menubar and choose "file save as "
*Give this file a name that makes sense to you and enclose it in quotes so that notepad retains the .vbs extension. Suggestion would be "runline.vbs "
*Save it to desktop (for example) or anyplace you wish and make a shortcut to it and place that shortcut on the desktop. When the script or shortcut is clicked on the runline will open.

This of course does not answer the question of why whompuscat's startmenu runline was not functioning and in light of the fix used, we will never know for sure, but it may offer a workaround for some future member. I know there are a few other ways that could have worked as alternative ways to run things in the absence of a fix but while trying to find the root cause and fix consider this as just one more way and an unusual way at that (that's the reason it caught my attention). I found it an interesting tip and I thought I'd share it. This work around is aimed or geared toward those members who's windows problems are not time or patience constrained. A repair install of XP is a good tactic when both are an issue. What the reader does with this little vbs tidbit is up to them.

Hold down the windows/flag key (between the ctrl and alt keys on the left) like a shift key and tap r. For readers who encounter this thread in the future. Worked for me when the run on the start menu was removed by a prankster.
