Some of my programs just will not work unless I use the "Run As" option and uncheck the box that says: "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity." I'm using my own username when I do this.

My username has all administrative privileges. Why do I have to "Run As" using the same name I'm logged in as.?

I don't understand why only a few programs have this problem.

Why doesn't the box stay unchecked? I have to do the uncheck for every time I run the program.

Where would I change my security settings to stop XP from protecting me from myself?

I'm using Norton Antivirus 2003. No firewall.
I've scanned for viruses and trojans and found zip.

    Thank you.

Without worrying about the 'why' on this, the simple fix is to take ownership of the drive contents. Just do the take ownership at the root of each drive.

I'd give specifics but you didn't say which OS version you run.

Thanks Newt, but it didn't fix anything. I took ownership of both drives, checking the subcontainer box. The properties box shows that I am the owner of all I survey.

The same programs still run only if I use "Run As" and uncheck the "Protect my data..." box.

One program is ACDSee 6. I can't run the exe file directly, or through a shortcut, but if I go to the content menu for a directory, and choose "Browse with ACDSee ", it works.

In that case it sounds like maybe the account itself is corrupt to some extent.

If possible, create a new account and add it to your Administrator group. See if that one works OK.

Tried under another account and also as Administrator. No go.

Uninstalled ACDSee and reinstalled on another drive. Same deal.

I'm baffled. I'm at the point where I'm thinking of a reformat and reinstall. Already tried SFC and a repair installation.

Good idea to wipe and reinstall I think. Even if you manage to get this critter working, my guess is that other problems would continue to crop up.

Your guess is as good as mine. I'm backing up data now in order to reformat.

Thanks again for all the help.

To top it off, it's snowing here in RI. Wish I were back in NC, square dancing in Shallotte.

Surprise! The reinstall fixed all the problems.
