    Hello everyone........
Im gona be setting up a dedicated MW4(my favorite game)server and I have a few questions...My main puter specs are in my signature and I recently put together some puter parts to make a server(p3 800mhz,ethernet card,256mb ram pc100,300watt psu,voodoo3,windows98se)Ive tested server and let it run for a couple days and seemed to play good.I have a Motorola external cable modem and I plan on getting a Router to split connection. The router im gona get is the Linksys BEFSR41
.Now I need to know that if I have my two computers with two ethernet cards and my modem all I need is the router and cables? ...Cables...What type of RJ45's do I use from modem to router and router to puters?? And is the router ive choosin a good one??
    Thx

Fabulous router. Only one I'd choose. (And have)
    I use Cat 5 cable.

What I know about running servers isn't worth printing. Just wanted to endorse your router choice. :)

The page Here should get you up to speed on cabling for the setup you have.

    Excellent router/switch choice.

For the record, RJ-45 describes only the connectors at the cable ends. For instance, RJ-11 is the standard telephone connector and RJ-45 is the most common for computer network wires.

The cable you will use is UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) and the usual these days is Cat-5 which describes the number of twists per inch. The more you got, the better the cable works.

I have everything working now with no problems now i have one more question on my XP rig since I installed router and KVM stitch(keyboard, video, and mouse switch) when I boot up it takes longer to boot it kinda hangs at the Windows XP pro screen..is it possible it takes longer for XP to detect my monitor, keyboard, and mouse cuz they are running through the KVM switch?(I always have it switched on the puter when its booting) The windows98se puter boots real fast no problems on the one..guess I can plug them directly to the XP puter and see if it boots fast but im at work and just curious ...but ill try that when i get home....
    thanks

Somewhere between very possible and probable that the KVM device is causing the slow XP boot.

Have you tried tech support for the switch maker?

Actually I tried putting the keyboard, mouse, monitor directly into the windows XP computer and still long boot :( the only thing else that i changed is the Router ...Is it possible that something is configured wrong with the router that is making it take longer to boot or maybe it just does with a router? I guess next step is to eliminate router and see if that cures it ...I just didnt want to take router out it took me awhile to configure and figure out ...lol
    thx
