Resolved router not finding internet connection

    I have had a wireless network set up for some time and only recently am I having problems. I have a Linksys wrt54gs w/speedbooster wireless router. I am connecting to a broadband cable modem (no brand I can find). I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium. Internet works just fine when I connect modem straight to the computer. My wireless devices i.e. Ipod Touch and PS3 find the wireless network and connect to it, but can't connect to internet. I have troubleshooted this with Linksys as well as a few other places and still no results, I am really hoping you folks can help. I have even tried a different wireless router with the same results so I don't believe it to be a faulty router (unless a second brand new one is also broke). My desktop PC is hardwired to the router but it still doesn't connect to the internet. Network Magic shows that the PC and my Ipod are connected to the network, but a red dotted line is indicating it cannot find the internet connection. I would appreciate your insight. Thanks!

    0. Unplug modem.
    1. Unplug router.
    2. Turn off comp.
    3. Turn on modem, wait until it fully synchronizes, about 30 seconds.
    4. Connect modem to router WAN (Internet) port using ethernet cable.
    5. Plug in router, wait until it synchronizes with modem, about 15-20 seconds.
    6. Connect comp to router LAN port (port 1,2,3 or 4) using ethernet cable.
    7. Turn on comp.

    note. changes made to wireless settimgs in router MUST be made from a comp connected by wire.

    I tried your steps and so far nothing is different. Do you have another suggestion?

    Open the Network Properties for the adapter. In Vista, click on Start > Search and type ncpa.cpl

    Rt click LAN adapter > select Properties > double click Internet Protocol TCP/IPv4 > Advanced button > WINS Tab > put check in Enable NetBios over TCP/IP > OK out of all windows.

    Desktop pc could have a bad cat5 cable.

    Most likely the router is misconfigured. Try a hard reset of the router by pressing the reset button for about 15 seconds and with the button pushed in unplug the router. Plug it back in following the sequence above.

    Per your suggestion I followed your steps for the LAN Adapter. I clicked on Enable NetBios over TCP/IP but it didn't help. I also did a hard reset of the router with no results thier either.

    In the past Linksys has done some work with cloning a MAC address. I don't really know what that means but it used to fix my problem on my old computer that was running XP. During troubleshooting it did not fix it this time, but do you think it would make a difference now given the settings you had me change.

    How do I find out for sure if the cat5 cable is bad, and for that matter, where is the cat5 cable?

    Thanks again for your help. I apologize for my lack of knowledge.

    There's a cat5 cable that goes from the modem to the router and another cat5 cable from the router to the comp. Looks like a phone wire with larger ends (8 pin connector).

    Who is the ISP? Any markings or labels on underside of cable modem?

    Connect cable modem directly to comp > open Web browser > go to this address: 192.168.1.100 and see if it gets a modem page. If so, post modem info.

    Other thing to try in order to get things working is to follow sequence posted above, afterwhich call your ISP and request that they send a reset/refresh signal to the modem. The modem should then synchronize to the MAC address of the router.

    I contacted my ISP. They were able to give me information that was very helpful. The only security type that is recognized was WEP. Linksys support had me change from WEP to a more secure setting, therefore making the modem incompatable with the router. Thank you for your help!
