I just installed a cable router with cable broadband service.
With the hardware of a router does this provide any security at all. Just installed the router out of the box by default.
there is a firewall of theirs included in the box . i was running Norton before. Do I still need a software firewall. Is it a good idea ?
    thanks

    It is a good idea!

A Router is not a Firewall as some think but by using NAT it is a natural Firewall by nature.

There are Routers with builtin in hardware firewalls.

I would reccomend a good 2 way Firewall for maximum protection.

I reccomend Zone Alarm 2.6. It is the best version. Not 3.0.

No, you do not need a software firewall if you have a NAT router, a good antivirus app and some common sense such as 'do not open email attachments unless you scan them first' and have your email application running as secure as possible.

Personal Firewalls are OK for broadband connections IF you do not have a router, otherwise they are mostly just a bunch of bells & whistles for the user who likes to always 'do something' even when he does not have to.

My router has NAT and about once a month or so my firewall stops someone who gets through it. Guess what I will keep installed.

    Schamish,

I must echo Mflynn and Train's comments.

Even though my Linksys Router uses NAT I still have a software firewall on all machines with an Internet connection.

I will not rely solely on NAT to protect me from the outside world... I like to emulate the skydivers.....they always have a backup:) For me that backup is ZoneAlarm.

I have seen folks who even though they have a NAT router once they enable such things as DMZ and port forwarding the NAT feature no longer provides ample security.
