I have a machine that is behind a network firewall so I have my XP firewall turned off. Recently a VPN application has stopped working and indications are that there is a firewall incompatibility issue. When I looked at Security Center, I was surprised to find that it indicates a firewall is on. However, Windows Firewall shows it is off as it should be. The implication is that there is some third party firewall software running which I did not (intentionally) install. I cannot find anything that looks like firewall software to either turn off or uninstall. Obviously Windows knows about something so how can I find what this firewall software is and how to control it. I have Norton AV so I doubt it is a virus but I suppose that is still a remote possibility. TIA.

Go to the Malware section and read what logs are needed and post them. Broni will help you there and he is good at what he does.

Thanks. I take it you suspect it is indeed malware rather than an inadvertent install of a 3rd party firewall?

Either way, we can find out. By posting what is asked, we can see what is on there and advise you of it.

Sorry for not replying but my mainboard went belly up. I decided to purchase a new system rather than replacing the mainboard. With a new system the problem is moot.
