I am using road runner cable modem internet access. I want to be able to use my laptop and desktop on the same connection. RR's website lends no help for this. I have a hub and a network card for my laptop. I can't even get the 2 pc's to share files and the internet connection. Any suggestions would help.

    Home Networking

I am new at this networking but let me tell you what I did:
I have 2 computers running Win98se setting about 1 foot apart. about 3 months ago I purchased a Hub (NETGEAR EN104tp) and ever sence then I have been trying to get everything to work. This is how it is connected together. One NIC card in each PC connected to ports 2 & 3 of the Hub with stright through cables. The cable modem is connected to port 4 (UpLink Port) of the Hub with a stright through cable. All of the "SHARING" and "DRIVERS" was set up in both computers. Both computers had access to the internet at the same time or by them selves but I couldn't get the computers to talk to each other ( "SHARING "). I read everthing I could on this site but I couldn't find an example hook up just like mine. I ran across a artical talking about protocols so I installed one more protocol "NetBEUI ", now everthing works, the computers share files & printers and I have ZoneAlarm on both systems. If I can help anyone with my limited knowledge let me know.

F-EMDE it worked like a charm to get the pc's to share files. I couldnt get the internet connection to work on both pc's though. Upon further examination of my hub there was some "MCI/X" button that i had to enable to get the internet to work. That only partially solved the problem because only one of my pc's will connect to the internet. Road runner says i have to buy another IP address, and i was wondering if there was any way around this. Any help will be appreciated thanks.

    Edit changed spelling.

I am a little confused. Do I want to run ICS on the computer that the RR works on or the one that it doesn't. Also both of the PC's are set to obtain an IP address automotically. Thanks in andvance.

The way around buying multiple IP addresses is to use a Router/Switch instead of a hub. They are pretty easy to set up and cost less than $100

The savings on the extra IP addresses will make it pay for itself in a matter of months.

I have 3 computers set up this way and I'm saving almost $14 a month by not having to pay for 3 IP addresses, just 1.

If you do decide to go the router/switch way (which I have done and love it), make sure there are no firewalls running on your internal PCs or, if you want to have them, make sure the PCs are allowed thru each others firewall.

I spent hours and hours beating my head against that one - (and I should have known better).

LinkSys I use and like. NetGear I have heard great things about from folks I trust. Probably other good ones out there but these two are excellent.

    Confused

    Slk230mb & guys
I don't understand, my systems are just like slk230mb's as discribed in my earlyer reply and I assure you mine works fine, do you think some of his cables are cross-over instead of stright-through.
I run Win98se on both computers. I don't remember using ICS to set up my systems. I think the key in using a HUB is to connect the cable modem to the UPLINK port of the HUB and using stright-through cables (3)
Maybe I'am just lucky, but I dought it.

Different cable companies have different setups, yours may not require anything to be done on the computer such as a specific name under Computer name or a specific Workgroup.

If you check your cable bill closely you are more than likely being charged extra for additional computer(s)

I am seing more and more ( even on the Linksys Router Box ) a recommendation to run a software firewall along with the router.

The software firewall section of the Linksys routers is an addition included in the last firmware upgrades.

I'll bet that Linksys is a member of these companies affiliate programs.

:) Now where in the world would you get an idea like that ? :)

Maybe because they refer to a specific piece of software ?

If my B-Day request if fullfilled I will find out later this Month.
