    Hi all

I have an HP external hard drive (model no. hd1600) that informs me "the media is rights protected ".

Anybody have an idea of how i can remove the protection so i can use the drive please?

The drive has "software ", do you have it installed? If it is installed, try uninstalling and reinstalling it.

Do you have any important data on the drive? If not, reformat it.

    Here is the User Guide

Do you have a HP Media Center or Entertainment Center computer? There is an update

I'm not sure how close that is to your "media rights" problem. :)

Is the error on one or two files/folders or on all the files/folders ?

    Hi mattman & rsinfo

There is absolutely no access to the hard drive itself. I tried to format it but only got the rights protected notice. I was given this a couple of years ago but didn't have any software with it, i thought it was a plug'n'play device and had no problems with it at all. At the back end of last year i wrapped it up and put it away as i didn't need it then but now i would like to use it. I will email my friend who 'donated' it and see if he has the original installation disc, if not then it looks like i will have to part with £10 to buy another one. I'm surprised that HP charge for it as most companies give free software downloads etc for their products.......

Thanks for the heads up anyway, greatly appreciated and as you have answered my initial question i will consider this as resolved :)
