Hello people! I just joined the website today and am very happy to have found you. The only problem is that it took a while for me to figure out how to actually post on here ):

OK, now for the tiny problem:
My dad and me were trying to make a website using a small dell server he bought a while ago. Its up and running, but i have no control over editing it. I asked him if he can go ahead and make me an administrator but i think he doesn't want to have equal powers as his 15 year old son. So what are the rights i would need to JUST have enough control over the website such as editing pages and posting them on the server. Thank you:)

You just need write permissions to the folder containing the website's files. This should be the directory specified in the website's properties in IIS.

Tell your father to find the folder on the server, right click on it and select properties. Then go to the security tab. Add your user account and ensure you have read and write rights. If you are accessing this folder from another PC, you will probably want to share the folder. It's not a good idea to try accessing this folder from outside your network, so don't open up any firewall rules to do so.

And make sure you have a firewall between the web server and the internet. One at the router and one running on the server would be good. If this is a basic web site, the ONLY port you want to allow access into is port 80.

And make sure you keep your system up-to-date. IIS needs to be kept patched and up-to-date, and the easiest way to do this is to keep the whole system up to date.

Are you doing this from a remote PC via a shared folder? If so check your share permissions. They also need to be set to read and write.

It is confusing, but you need both file and share permissions set correctly.
