I have noticed recently that if I right click on any program in 'Start Menu/All Programs' I get a flash on the screen but not the usual box. It seems the box appears on the screen and then disappears very quickly.

If I go to the shortcut in "Windows Explorer\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs" and right click, I see the box and can click anything in it.

I think this changed recent but I have no idea when.

Can someone tell me how to get the right click box to stay on the screen? I think something is closing it as soon as it opens. Could this be something in Tweakui?

    Daniel,

This seems to be the standard response to all matters weird in XP at present - download, immediately update and run Spybot and Ad-aware and delete all they find (green listings in Spybot are Usage tracks and optional to delete). URL's in my sig.

Post back if the problem remains.

I have Spybot and Ad-aware and keep them updated. I run them on a regular basis, delete all they find, and it has not eliminated this problem. I discovered this problem about two weeks ago. I have no idea when it changed because I seldom right click on something in the program list. However, I do know it was working some time back because I have created shortcuts to the desktop from that list.

    Thanks for responding.

This thread sure has been quiet. Is everybody mad at me? Tell me what I did and I will try to make it right. Have I finally stumped the board? Can this be the unanswerable question?

[I hope you know, the above is just kidding] :D

Seriously, someone should have an idea what caused this. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Okay, try this:
Right click on the taskbar, choose properties
Start menu tab, select customize, then advanced
Make sure "enable dragging and dropping" is ticked.

    Hope this helps.

It is strange that you just posted this suggestion. While I was offline, I did some checking of various possibilities and had found that the "enable dragging and dropping" was not checked. I checked it and the problem disappeared.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway. I am just glad to find it, I hate something not working as it should.

At least I can assume that you were not mad at me or maybe you felt sorry for me because no one else would talk to me. :D

EDIT: Further thought on this and I concluded that great minds run in the same direction.

To be honest, I remember reading about this not too long ago in another thread, but I didn't remember the fix, and when I did a search, I didn't find it. This morning, I saw your post, took a sip of coffee and something clicked. If my brain were a hard drive, it would need a thorough defrag! Glad you found the fix, and don't ever think for a minute we don't care about you! No pouting permitted on the BBS, just nag! :D Data retrieval in humans isn't as simple as Google, sigh... Thanks for posting back.

    Johanna :)

This is strange. I remember the thread and the post from PeteC on the 31st. Your reply 30 minutes later somehow completely escaped my notice (and evidently everyone else's too  ).

This isn't usual but does happen on occasion. If you are ever 'ignored' on a future thread, please do just what you did here but maybe even quicker.

    Thanks Newt

I really did not feel ignored, I just figured no one had an answer. It was just my way of getting attention to this thread.

All in good fun and I got the problem solved.

Thanks to all who have helped me solve many issues recently. It has been good to have this board to turn to when I ran into something I could not figure out.
