I just got an Acer laptop (early present!) and I'm having an issue with it. I'm not sure if this is the proper subforum for this but since I'm running on Vista I thought I'd give it a shot

The problem is that everytime I try to type in a text field (any text field except... yahoo messenger now that I think about it) the drop down menu you get when you right-click will pop up. I'm not hitting any extra keys or the touch pad. It pops up every 1-4 keystrokes and is INSANELY annoying. I'm using Firefox as my browser, but it's doing this in WordPad also.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this?

Did you notice any pattern? Any specific letter, you hit?
Normally Shift+F10 will open right click menu.

No,no pattern. Sometimes I won' evnbe typing, I'l just have the cursor in the text field and *pop* there it is. Sometimes it happens everytime I hit a key, sometimes I can type an entire sentence before it happens again. I've tried disabling the non-microsoft context menu handlers (as per another forum's suggestion) but that made no difference... This is a new laptop so I'm at a loss here. I emailed Acer about it but they have yet to reply and of course they don't have a U.S. tech number.

Any spills happened? I hope, not.
    Did you try System Restore?
How are your security issues? Firewall, antivirus, antispyware.
Do you download some less secure stuff from the Internet?

Do you mean, you don't have any antivirus protection?
    Firewall?

Not good. Who knows, what's on your computer without any AV.
    Do you have firewall up?
When right click pop-up comes up, can you see any unusual/strange entries there?

I'd like to see your HijackThis log.
    Download HijackThis:
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
and post its log back here.
I'll take a look, and if I see something bad, I'll send you to Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

OK, downloadedAVG and ran the scan, which cme back clean, no threats, so that's good.

I still need to try the system restore. (I've ben chasing my tantrum machine....er...three year old around ).

Next on the list wil be the HiJackThis. I haven't done much downloading, I have Firefox, two add-ons that I use on my desktop pc, Yahoo mesenger and now AVG

Is it possible that this might be a keyboard issue? An idea on how to find out about that?
I really apreciate you taking the time to go through this with me :)

    It's been a while, but I still remember...hehehe

I can't say, at least not yet.

    You owe me two answers:
    - What's your firewall situation?
    - When right click pop-up comes up, can you see any unusual/strange entries there?

Sorry, I wasn't trying to avoid the firewall question. It *was* off but I switched it on,it's the Windows Firewall (not sure if that makes a difference.. sorry I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to the technical end.

I haven't noticed any strange or unusual entries in the menu. For all practical purposes it functions normally except that it pops up all the darn time.

I'm going to try the system restore now, then if that doesn't help I'm going to run the HiJackTHis and post that here.
Hmm.. maybe this is Santa's way of showing me it's not nice to open my present early.

    Better, then nothing.
When your "little devil" gives you some more time, download, and install free Comodo firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Then, turn your Windows firewall off, and install Comodo.
I'll be waiting for your HJT log.

    Hi Crypixie83,
I did a search on Google because I too was wondering if it was an unforseen issue with the keyboard...I also believe when you posted your situation at the CyberTech forum, they also mentioned your keyboard... Probably a good time to take advantage of the warranty...

That is correct, keyboard malfunction was mentioned on CyberTech. I tend to ask questions on multiple forums, I find it gets more answers. I hope you don't mind that I post in multiple forums.

As far as warranty, we're checking into that as well. The laptop was bought off of Best Buy's auction site, so we want to make sure the warranty is still effective.

Tomorrow my husband is going to speak with a friend of his who works in Geek Squad to see what we may be able to do if it is in fact a keyboard malfunction. I'm hoping this will be an easy fix, not a "send the computer to the company and be without my christmas present until Easter" sort of situation. *sigh*

I can see two questionable entries:
    - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [?????????] ??????????????e
    - O20 - AppInit_DLLs: eNetHook.dll
(the last one should run as a startup, which means, it's suppose to show up as O4, not O20 entry, and it should be located in C:\Windows\System32 directory).

In that case, I'll ask you to repost your HJT log at Removing Spyware & Viruses section. Please, post also a link to this thread, so they know what we did, so far.

BTW...as the other person asked, is your laptop still under warranty?
Don't forget about getting Comodo firewall, at some point.

    Hi Crypixie83,
We always want our friends to be happy and if making multiple inquiries is what it takes, than so be it...Either way we Welcome you aboard and nothing will make my day than to see the possible cause be found here first...The problem you are experiencing is definetely interesting and even though it's not certain it is indeed the keyboard, I think it will be interesting to see what the end result will be...Like others, I will keep searching for answers and will stay with you to the end...And if you are so fortunate to be provided with a fix by other sources, can you please try and let us know...Thank you

I think it may be fixed *crosses fingers*
Acer got back to me and gave me instructions to reinstall the touchpad driver and that seems to have done the trick! Yay!

I know, I still need to post the log, and I will do so as soon as I get a moment to think clearly :D

    Hi Crypixie83,
Thank you for letting us know, greatly appreciated...As for the log, I think they are usually posted in the Spyware section and not in the Windows Vista section of this forum...You can still post a log in that section if you wish just to have one of the specialist view it to make sure everything okay...
