I have encountered the same problem (except for the Paint Shop Pro part) as was reported in this thread back in 2003. I am not quite sure how to proceed to fix the problem.

I recently started using WinXP Pro and everything was fine until last night. Now, when I double click on an folder I am automatically sent to "Search" instead of "Open ". I right-clicked in some of the folders and saw that "Search" was now the default choice instead of "Open" which was farther down in the menu list. How do I change this back to the way it was?

I also noted that a shortcut to the control panel I put on the desktop had Paint Shop Pro as the first default choice on the right click context menu. It wasn't that way when I originally did it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is what was posted as to how to fix the problem.

Download and run (double-click) this fix:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_folder_open.vbs

You can read it first in Notepad if that makes you more comfortable. It is safe and you may need to ignore warnings from your antivirus. AV's have a probably justified prejudice against VBscripts .

If PaintShop shows in all your shortcuts' context menus, you may need to go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk in the registry and delete any Open With entry.

Here is a list of default XP file associations. You can modify these in Folder Options, File Types.

Could someone explain to me how I should proceed? Not sure what to do with the what to do with the text that opens when I click on http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_folder_open.vbs

    Thanks- TRoof

Double click on the URL to bring up the download dialogue box, save the file to disk and then run it by double clicking on it.

Thanks PeteC. That was very painless. Probably shouldn't ask but what the heck. Any reason that this problem would occur in the first place? Thanks- TRoof

This problem is most often caused by opening Explorer or My Computer and clicking on the Tools > Folder Options > File Types > File Folder and selecting "Advanced" then clicking OK instead of Cancel. Even though you have only looked and made no changes, changes will nevertheless be made IF you have selected "Advanced" and IF you then click OK. To avoid this, always click "Cancel" when you don't intend to change things.

Thanks SD2. That pretty much explains it. I have a habit of poking around in dark places without a flashlight. TRoof
