I have a second hand computer with W2K but I do not have the password so I can't log in. I do not have W2K on disk but I do have W98 on disk.
Is there a way to reformat the hard drive without logging into the computer and then installing W98?

Generically speaking, you boot off a windows 98 boot disk with cd rom support. Then from the A prompt you type Format C:

Pop in the win98 cd and launch the installation.

Thanks for your reply. I have downloaded a Windows 98 boot disk from the internet (on a different machine that works) but when I try to turn on the computer it tells me to take out the floppy disk so how does it work as a boot disk? Also what do you mean by CD Rom support.
Remember - I am in here as a beginner.

    Killing W2K

If that drive is set up as NTFS you won't be able to just format it.

Get GWscan from the gateway.com website:

    http://www.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?now=1&id=4472

use it to write zeros to the drive. (when it asks, are you sure you must type in yes)

Now your HDD is virgin again, and it will need to be partitioned.

Boot to your W98 cd (option 2), choose start computer with cdrom support (option 2 again), this will dump you to an A:>
(don't ask me to explain now, but thats part of your CDrom)

Now FDISK - say yes to large disk support.
opt 1 - create PRI DOS partition
    opt 1 - again
when it completes testing drive hit "y" it will verify again.
when it completes hit ESC to exit.
reBoot to your W98 cd (option 2), choose (opt 1) install windows 98 from cd.
It will detect that drive is not formated - let it format, then the normal install will proceed.
