Windows 2003 server with dns, dhcp and active directory. Reverse dns is set up. When I use "nslookup" I get the following:
** can't find server name for address X.X.X.X, non-existent domain
    Default server unknown
Address X.X.X.X (the ip address is correct).

    Any help would be appreciated.

Is this from the console of the DNS box or from a client using this box as DNS?

Does an nslookup to the IP address of the DNS machine (not the DNS or WINS name, nslookup 1.2.3.4) return the correct DNS name of the machine from a client or the server itself?

This can be caused by a couple of problems but it sounds like the reverse registration is not completing. Is your reverse lookup zone AD integrated and are dynamic updates allowed? Is the DDNS MMC showing a correct registration for the DNS box?

If you do not see a correct reverse registration for the DNS box, run a command prompt and type "ipconfig /registerdns ". Within 15mins, you should see a correct reverse registration. If not, dynamic updates are not taking place.

This is actually from the DNS box. I do have dynamic updates turned off for security reasons. And we only use DHCP reservations.
Nslookup returns the correct IP just not the name of the server.

We are having problems accessing a web site and their IT person said it was because of our reverse DNS.

I ran registerdns and got the following:

    Event Type: Information
    Event Source: DNS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 2502
    Date: 4/20/2005
    Time: 8:06:05 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: XXXXXXXX

The DNS server has completed a scavenging cycle but no nodes were visited.
Possible causes of this condition include:

    1) No zones are configured for scavenging by this server.
    2) A scavenging cycle was performed within the last 60 minutes.
    3) An error occurred during scavenging.

The next scavenging cycle is scheduled to run in 360 hours.

The event data will contain the error code if there was an error during the scavenging cycle.
