Is there a way to restrict sites in NS 7.2 like there is with IE? A forum I go to frequently now has a annoying banner that flashes constantly and is a ad.doubleclick. Posters have said how to get rid of it using IE, but not NS. Any suggestions? Thanks

Download Adblock extension and you can get rid of that ad stuff. This is for Firefox but there may be an equivalent for Netscape....

  3. to hide this advert.

Yeah... I've done that as well. But in a sense, it is not a complete answer to the question. For instance, in IE we one can determine the content of the sites (cutting out gratuitous violence, sex and so forth) and then put it under password protection so that it acts as a sort of poor-man's Net Nanny. My daughter is looking for a way to restrict my grandson's surfing and IE does appear to give more control in this area. I understand that third-party programs will also do this but why not Netscape? Firefox? Mozilla? :(

    Auntpolly,
I can think of two ways using the Prefbar extention
which is more selective than the Adblock, and I think is fairer, because I have nothing against ads in general ( we get a free ride, don't we?), but rather obnoxious ads. One is to select the ad, and click on the Kill Flash button. This is completely reversible, and you are not going to mess up Flash capabilities. The other one is to uncheck the Flash button, a bit to the left, on the same Prefbar.
But you will have to recheck the box, or just forget about Flash (you can always delete the Flash .dll plugin). You could, also, possibly, block cookies from the offending site, using your preferences.
As for James' musing, the answer is very simple. IE and the gecko-based browsers are different, and would require different approaches, for third party software to work. And, where is the money for this? In the worst case, for Microsoft, there are 10x more IE-users than the others combined, so there is no interest for the developers to work on anything other than that.
I have never had to deal with a situation which required any control, but I am pretty sure that it can be done by cookie controls. There is also free software, out there

    Found something

When I did a google search for adblock for netscape I found a great web page that gave me a usercontent.css file that blocked ads. There was also a code to only allow flash if clicked on. It works! No more annoying ads on the forum site I visit. And other ads are gone too. Like in my Yahoo hoempage.

It looks good. And, the prefbar settings have not worked for me with a couple of ads. So, it well worth trying.

Note: a file with that description exists in NS7.2 Compact, and in kmeleon. I copied the Compact usercontent.css file to one of my other 7.2 profiles. At this point, I see no different.

    AuntPolly,

Thanks for sharing that page with us, and it really looks great. I've added both CSS codes to my userContent.css file, and will see how it goes...

It does work. And, I get empty areas, which have Flash(click to play).
This happens at one site which I has legit Flash, and clicking works.
Now, I have to find an unwanted one.

Yess!! This is why I come to this website.

Our local very-small-town newspaper has just redesigned their gawdforesaken homepage, and tied themselves in with some ad packager that provides trash Flash ads with those stupid emoticons that jump up and down, and sleazy polls with Michael Jackson's pictures on it (gag me!). Despite complaints to the management, they're not going to give up the ad revenue, but until I found the information about floppymoose.com and the information about the .css files, it made reading the newspaper online a chore. Thanks so much!!

Now if only someone could provide a solution to their pop-unders...

Popunders are usually connected with Spyware of some type. I found out that you can protect Firefox with Spyware Blaster . I am still looking at its efficiency. It seems good, and
it seems to be one one of the few free pieces of software which are worth supporting. SB protects IE, as well.
