Being the ONLY user on my machine, I've noticed that sometime since first installing XP Home SP2, it has QUIT having the password box already open when the Welcome screen comes up.

Now I have to press the tab key twice, or click on my user name, in order for the password box to open for me.

It was SO NICE to have that box already open when the Welcome screen came up.

I would LOVE to be able to fix whatever needs to be fixed to make that password box be already open again when I come to that screen.

Anyone know how I can get that open password box back again?
... without doing a clean reinstall?

    A registry hack, perhaps?

Or is it someplace else in XP?

    Thanks! :D

I have no idea why that occurs and have a similar situation in that on my desktop (my build with full retail XP Pro SP2) the logon box is open, but on my new laptop (HP preinstalled XP Pro SP2) and old laptop (my install of retail XP Pro SP2) the box is closed.

To be honest for a couple of seconds each boot it isn't worth losing sleep over, but I would be interested to see what other responses you get :)

I should add that I am the only user on all three computers.

OK, I've been googling this for about a week now, and someone somewhere thought it might be when you share a folder... so have you shared any folder(s) on your laptops - but not on your desktop??

Well........ considering how much searching I've already done for this answer, yeah, I've lost a little sleep... :p and will probably lose more...

    Plus, I'm lazy  ;)

Plus, I want to learn this :D

Plus, maybe? you need to learn it too? LOL

Having fired up both laptops to check on file sharing I find that I was not totally accurate in my last post :( The new laptop does open with the logon box as does the desktop. The old one does not.

I have no shared files and 'Enable simple file sharing (recommended)' is unchecked on all 3 computers. This is a Pro 'thing' which enables the Security tab on folder properties, etc. That tab is not available in Home.

I have seen enough differences between different fresh installs of XP on various computers to cease worrying about some of the vagarities of Windows - I already spend far too much time here trying to fathom out far deeper problems :)

But, if you do come across a solution/explanation I am all ears :)

You are the ONLY user, but is there more than one user on the log in screen? Does the Guest user show up? Is so you'll need to disable it.

Control Panel>user accounts>change the way users log on or off. Make sure the line that says use the welcome screen isn't checked.
