Recently I bought a new computer. There were some emails I wanted to transfer from the old one so I dug into the folders and copied the file which had my emails in it. When I transfered the file to the new computer, OE seems not to recognize it. I opened OE and created a new file with the same name as the one I transfered and saw that I had two files with the same name except the newly created one had a (1) after it. Is there a way to get OE to recognize the added folder with my emails in it? Or maybe merge the file to the newly created one that OE does recognize?

    Thanks.

PS. The old computer had xp with oe 6. The new one is the same so there shouldn't be a conflict there I hope.

This should work for you ....

Copy all the *.dbx files from your old computer

On your new computer create a folder 'Outlook Express' - or anything that suits.

Copy the *.dbx files into the new folder on the new computer.

Open OE > Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder - click Change and type in the location of your new folder > OK.

OE will give you a warning message - read it carefully and agree. Emails in the original OE folder will be lost - can save them individually if you need to and OE will use the new store when restarted. You should then see all your old emails.

Also export your Address book from the old computer to floppy and import into OE on the new computer

And while you're at it export IE Favourites from old computer to floppy and import into new computer.

    Hi Pete

I only copied the one .dbx file that I wanted. I put all my emails in this one folder before copying. But I understand what you are saying so will do so. I had no trouble importing address book or favs, just the email. Thanks.

Make sure the Outlook Express you're trying to import into is updated/patched to at least the same point the OE was that you saved the dbx file from.

I've had lots of problems importing messages from saved dbx files until I figured that one out.
