    Hi Everyone,

I just got a new Win 7 laptop and of course IE 9 came pre-installed.

Unfortunately, it has no search box -- you must search in address box which for a variety of reasons I don't want to do.

Is there any way to recreate the search bar used in IE 8?

If there's not, how can I uninstall IE 9 and then download and install IE 8?

Do I need to first download another browser such as Chrome to be able to access the web once I've uninstalled IE 9 so I can download IE 8?

    Advice appreciated.

    Thanks,

    David

Maybe if you can't get this figured out, Google tool bar may work. Or somebody elses tool bar.

There's no other solution then to install a tool bar (such as the Google tool bar or others).

Personally I wouldn't go back yo IE8 (an older, less secure browser), but if you want you could. Just uninstall IE9 from Programs and Features > View installed updates > Windows Internet Explorer 9.

Actually, Arie, IE 9 is not in "programs and features" but in "turn Windows features on or off. "

My question is, can I download and install IE 8 while I still have IE 9 running?

Or do I have to do the following:

1] download and install chrome or Firefox as a non-default browser.

2] Turn IE9 off (uninstall it).

3] Use Chrome to download (from where?) IE 8 and then install that as new default browser.

    Please advise.

Since it isn't in Programs and Features - you can't uninstall it.

In programs and features, there's a tab called "turn Windows features on or off" and you can uncheck the box for IE 9 and turn it off (i.e., uninstall it) there.

I just want to know whether I can download and install IE 8 using IE 9 -- and then uninstall IE 9. Or if I have to use the 3-step routine I outlined above to go back to IE 8.

A download is a download the no one will ever know how you got it to your pc.

I apologize for being unclear. What I'm asking is, Can I find IE 8 somewhere and download it even while I still have IE 9 installed?

Or do I have to uninstall IE 9 first?

And where can I even get IE 8? I looked on MS, but they offer it only for Vista.

Why not just put the main Google search page onto your Favourites Bar, then it is accessible with just one click.

Thanks, everyone. Perhaps I'll just use Firefox, which has a UI similar to IE 8 (at least it has a searchbar).

All I know is, searching in the address bar is NOT a good option for me.

I suggest you look again in the spot I suggested. Windows 7 doesn't ship with IE9, but with IE8, so you at one point had to update to IE9.

Note that it should be listed as Windows Internet Explorer 9

If it is not listed, use this command from an elevated command prompt: FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:mad:fname /norestart "

You'll get some prompts "Access Denied ", click continue. When the command has finished running, click the up arrow on your keyboard, this will re-select the command you just ran. Run it a 2nd time.

When finished, reboot to complete the process.

Now I'm confused: we are both right -- IE 9 is listed both in "turn windows features on or off" as well as in "installed updates. "

But how could it be an update? I bought this new laptop a week ago and the day I turned it on the browser was IE 9.

Are you saying that if I uninstall IE 9 in "view installed u[pdates" that it will revert to IE 8?

If so, what happens tpo the IE 9 listing in "turn Windows features on or off?" Does it morph into an IE 8 listing?

That's why I told you to look there. turn windows features on or off is useless in this exercise.

Because IE8 is the standard browser. Your laptop was updated with SP1 & IE9

    Yes

    Yes

You're a genius! Or at least compared to me you are.

But before I uninstall IE 9, is there any possible bad thing that might happen -- like I'd be left without a browser?

In various web forums, people mention that this has happened when they have uninstalled IE 9 -- quite a few mention this happening, actually.

I understand that you believe that can't happen, but I swear I'm not making it up. People say that.

There's always a possibility that things go pear-shaped.

That's why we have backups & System Restore.

As a further safety, download another browser (Google Chrome / Firefox).
