Every time I try using System Restore, I just get the message: "Restoration Incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored to ... (whatever date I chose). No changes have been made to your computer." I have tried just about everything mentioned in this thread except reinstalling System Restore. (I think I may have done that some time ago without success.) Any other suggestions before I try reinstalling System Restore? My operating system is Windows XP SP3 and I use Norton 360 as my antivirus program. My computer is a Compaq Presario laptop. [I have not tried booting in safe mode, then trying system restore.]

    GaryFelts,

As I mentioned above, I had the exact same Restore problem and error message as you. Someone told me that it was a Norton NAV problem (although not everyone experiences it). In my case I was using Norton SystemWorks. I removed SW completely and reloaded it WITHOUT NAV and everything has worked fine ever since (but you still can't use any restore points created before the removal of NAV). I now use AVG anti-virus and am a happy camper.

PS: I had to use a special Norton Removal Tool that I downloaded from their web site to remove all the stuff that Norton leaves in the registry even when you remove Norton thru the control panel. I don't know if you have to do that with Norton 360 but I am sure their website will tell you if they have a Norton Removal Tool for that product.

To see if this would work without uninstalling any software, I created a new test restore point. Then I completely disconnected from the Internet. After that I disabled Firewall and Autoprotect features of Norton 360. Then I tried restoring the test restore point. I was able to do so with no problems. Then I re-enabled the Firewall and Autoprotect features of Norton 360. Thanks for the hint.
