I have a Presario 2100 that I want to restore to original settings and give to my granddaughter. It has Windows XP. I have tried the restore discs (4) but they won't even open when I put them in the cd drive. Is there a way to do this without using the discs?

Are you sure, you're booting from the CD?
    Do you see this message?
Press any key to boot from CD

Another option is to press F10 at HP logo to access recovery partition (if the computer has one).

F11 is the key to do a recovery from the recovery partition (on that model)

As stated above, (if the Recovery Partition does not exist)
Place the first (Disk1) Recovery CD in the drive
    Restart the computer
You should see a menu displayed to select booting from the disc
    Continue installing Windows

More information can be found at HP here and here

F10 for XP, F11 for Vista.

Well THIS PAGE says F11 and does not mention F10 at all
But we may be getting mixed up with the key to press to select the boot options (HDD or CD..) which could be F10, ( I haven't checked) ;)

    Sorry for the confusion
Although you answered why F10 (XP) already. I have now created a post at HP forums asking for the definitive answer (ie the HP support article I posted does not say Vista only)
Anyway, I'll get back to you on that (if they answer their posts)

    @mike211
Please let us know if you found a Recovery Partition, or if your Setup discs now boot

I'm not sure what is not definitive in my quote, but....
I also dealt with HP computers with XP on them.
I also have Compaq with Vista on it.

So yes you were right , although you didn't mention laptops.
Anyway, thought I'd give the update, since my HP post was replied to 5mins ago (Wow they're quick  )
