I recently ran VCOM Fix-IT Utilities to tidy up my registry. I checked all the recommendations and it seemed fine, so I proceeded. Since then I cannot restart, shutdown, switch users or do a system restore.

Can anybody give me some assitance please.

    Thanks in advance

Paul - Welcome to the Board :)

As you have found out it is best to leave the registry well alone and only dabble with it in extreme circumstances:(

Does VCOM Fix-IT Utilities make a back up of the registry changes made? If so use it to restore the registry back to where it was.

If you have no backup of the registry changes your only option is probably a Repair of XP - do you have a retail copy of XP or a Recovery CD? Recovery CD's generally wipe the system clean and all data & programs are lost.

This MS KB article addresses the situation in which XP cannot be started due to a corrupted registry, which sounds not to be your situation, but I guess it would serve, but note some of the riders listed. You will need a full copy of XP for this.

Once you are up and running again back up the registry using Erunt or the method described here ....

Thanks for your help Pete. Will try your recommendations and will resist the urge to dabble in areas I don't understand! You live and learn.

Thanks again Pete - problem solved. I had unistalled VCOM Fix-it but I just reinstalled it and I still had my checkpoints.

The reason I originally ran Fix-it was because I had unistalled a couple of applications but on start up it comes up with error messages saying it's trying to load those applications but can't find them. I've run a couple of cleanup programs to try and remedy the problem. They all tell me they have sorted the problem but I still keep getting the error messages.

I also get a 'server busy' error message on startup. At the end of the day these are just annoyances rather than real issues.

    Thanks again for your help

    Paul

That's a relief :) I'm glad it was that straightforward.

If you want to elininate those start up messages for the apps that you have uninstalled there are a couple of approaches I would recommend .....

Download and run Startup Control Panel by Mike Lin. This will list most things that run at startup and give you the option to disable or remove. If you can identify an entry relating to those apps disable it.

If you want to search the registry relatively safely use RegSeeker and search for the apps name. Check that the backup button is checked, check each registry entry it finds for that name and mark for deletion.

Never do a 'blind' cleanup of the registry - it can lead to problems :D

If you have not already done so back up the registry as I suggested and sleep more soundly :)
