I tried to restart Windows ME in ms-dos mode by holding either the control key or F8 down during reboot. Both attempts were unsuccessful.

How can I start in ms-dos with Windows ME installed on my computer?

You were unsuccessful because the Command Prompt which you are looking for and the MS DOS Mode from within Windows are not available in ME.

They are not available in XP either.

98SE was the last version to have them.

The only way you are going to get your computer with ME installed on it to start in Dos Mode is create a startup floppy. Then use it to boot the computer.

I just gotta see about clearing something up here.

What Sid Zafran is trying to get to ( but is not available in ME ) is not the MS DOS MODE. It is strictly the DOS Command Prompt. And is pretty much unlimited in use.

And is what 95 & 98 show in the F8 menu as Command Prompt only.

The MS DOS Mode IS ONLY accessable when using Win95 or 98 and restarting it in the MS DOS Mode. Then it is Windows running in the MS DOS Mode. And this is limited as to what can ( or should be done )

The two are entriely different things.
