A lot more detail please otherwise we are floundering around in the dark trying to second guess your problem :)

By non responsive I assume you mean that the programs will not run?

Please give some examples of which programs are not responding and any error messages that may come up when you try to run them.

    non responsive programs

well it could be any program i use it doesnt do it every time but it does it more often than not. and there is no error messeages i will just say program not responding and sometimes i will have to use the windows task manager to shut it down.my computer tech line just keep telling me to wipe harddrive and reformat but it didnt help.i thought it might be a lack of memory so i upgraded to 768 mb of ram no change.i have shut down all startup programs but the virus protection.this is all the info i can think of.

Is this a problem which has developed over time or which has suddenly appeared? Are the non responsive programs from MS - part of Windows or third party software which you have installed?

If you have reformatted the hard drive then it is unlikely that the problem lies there, but to be on the safe side run CHKDSK

As a doublecheck on the drive download diagnostic software from the drive manufacturer's web site - if available.

Start > Run > type in chkdsk /r > OK and accept the offer to run at the next boot (the drive must be locked)

Check your memory using Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool Would be worth removing and reseating the memory and cleaning the contacts with a soft pencil eraser.

With a fresh install of XP (SP2 - fully patched?) there should not be a file problem. However it would be wise to run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow noting the space before the forward slash and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any were replaced look in Event Viewer > System.
