    Hello Everyone,

    I've been reading on this board about a resource problem in NS 7.1 and wondering if this could be my problem, too. Recently upgraded from 4.72 because it wasn't loading some web pages--had to use Internet Explorer. It was suggested that I go to NS 7.1 because 4.72 was old and couldn't keep up with today's codings. So I did. Now it is quite slow, plus I did not select "Custom Install" and got AOL stuff I don't want. When I uninstalled it from add/remove programs and then reinstalled it ( "Custom "), it left the AOL there, plus still had all my profiles intact, bookmarks, mail, everything, so I cannot believe it uninstalled it. When I have my task mgr. on, every little thing maxes out the CPU--including spinning the mouse wheel. Seems ridiculous. I am constantly trying to save hard drive space and other resources on my machine. I have a 6Ghard drive and 448 mg ram running XP Pro on a 450 processor which is not big and new and flashy but should be quitle adequate with my DSL and yet never seems to be enough. Have done lots of tweaking and now this 7.1 is dragging me through the sand. I realize I've noted several items here. Thought I'd get it all out! Any suggestions are welcome. Have 24-26 processes running, three boxes checked at startup tab when I run msconfig: two Norton antivirus and Instant Messenger. Thanks.

    You could always do a "clean install" to start fresh. Netscape should not delete your profiles when uninstalling, but it is always best to make a backup before doing so. If you need to delete profiles, delete them through the profile manager in Netscape. Additionally, N7.1 does not keep your user profile in the same location as N4.72. You should definately do a custom install and skip all the AOL garbage, or consider Mozilla.

    Netscape does have a resource problem for some windows users. I believe the current workaround is to add the following to your user.js file.

    user_pref( "browser.cache.memory.capacity ", 2048);
    or
    user_pref( "browser.cache.memory.capacity ", 4096);

    User.js file

    Profile locations

    Clean install

    Custom install

    Thanks Tranquilo,

    Will try adding to user profile as suggested.

    Any idea why the AOL stuff remained after uninstalling and reinstalling custum? I may try again. Thanks!

    You might try using add/remove programs to uninstall AOL, etc. I would think it would be listed there... Uninstalling Netscape must not uninstall it.

    As far as I am concerned the user.js tweak does little. The problem is particularly bad with sub-WinXP OSs.
    I have Win98, and I can wiped out in a hurry, if I do anything more than stay in NS7.1.
    However, I have a handier fix. That is to download and install the Prefbar, a simple addon, available at http://prefbar.mozdev.org Clear Cache is on by default, and you can, periodically click on that button. I have been starting at 86% resources, and have been sitting at 73%. I have had NS7.1 open before, but I am using Mozilla 1.4, which seems to have the same bad habits.

    As for the AOL stuff, I have lived with it for long time. It takes very little effort to delete the dumb shortcuts, and you can block all the popups you want by Managing the Popup blocker.
    And, if you do not want to deal with the AOL stuff, get yourself Mozilla 1.4.
