    I have Win98SE, 128mb RAM,
I have a Resource Meter in my System Tray, Win Patrol, AVG and Speaker volume.
For the several weeks my Resource meter indicates very low resources with a warning that I've used 90% of resources.
I tried CTRL-ALT-DEL to access my Task manager. This is what is running:
Explorer; AVG cc; RsrcMeter; Win Patrol; Systray; Type 32
I only have OE running while I check my e-mail
Browsing the Internet (one window open, then I close to go to another URL.
My rsource meter shows one "yellow line" and then a little bit after that I get the 90% warning. What is using up my resources??

    I tried a ScanDisk....no problems detected.

I also tried a scanreg /fix and that didn't help. So I tried a System Restore (scanreg /restore) to an earlier time and still get the low resource warning.

Today, I used my 98SE CD to reinstall windows. After a while I get the same resource warning again.
Help.....something is "leaking" and I can't stem the leak.
I am frantic after doing a reinstall.

I've also used the Add/Remove in Control Panel to uninstall many programs that I no longer use.

I also ran SFC and that didn't help.

Go to Start > Run and type msconfig then press <Enter>. What programs are listed under the Startup tab?

Under Start Up TAB in msconfig:
    Scan Registry
    System Tray
    IntelliType
    Win Patrol
    Task Monitor
    Load Pwr Profile
    AVG_cc
    AVG_EMC
    AVG_AMSVR
    AVG Free
    Resource Meter

Also, I checked Resource Meter and got:
    system resource: 89% free
    user resource: 89% free
    GDI resource: 94% free

Hope this is the info U R asking for.

Your system resources are good at 89% free. You may be running too many programs at once. The Resource Meter itself will use resources.

When the meter shows low resources, right click in the system tray and exit or disable the program AVG, Win Patrol and Type 32 (is this a typing program?) or go to Task Manager and shut them down there. See if the resources come back. If you can isolate one of those programs as the problem, try reinstalling it.

I NOTICE THAT YOU ARE NOT RUNNING A FIREWALL (sorry to yell :) ). Get ZoneAlarm free edition.

You could post a Hijack This log here. There may be something running in the background.

128Mb of RAM should run those programs on Win 98 easily.

Type32 is for Microsoft Office keyboard which I believe is IntelliType. If someone isn't using the features it doesn't need to startup.

    As for a Firewall:
    1) I have MS Defender and also a D-Link wired router for my 2-computer home network. I was told that I shouldn't have Zone Alarm if I have what is described above.
    2) I tried "ending task" for all running programs except explorer and systray.
small effect and right away, back to less than 90%.

    3) here is HiJack This LOG:

I don't really see anything wrong. You didn't need to install the WGA update on Win98SE. You are saying that the resources are falling below 90%. Resources are usually fine until they drop to 10-15%. You will notice programs running slow or freezeups. I never let the Resource Meter run on my Win98SE setup. All it did was use resources and drove me nuts because I kept looking at it. When I notice my PC getting slow while running programs I would shut some down then reopen them or reboot to regain resources.

    Thank U....Matt and Whiskeyman,
I can't point my finger on anything, but it seems that if anything was "leaking ", the "leak" may have been fixed. My resource meter for the past day has been doing OK. It hasn't once been below 50$, whereas I've been getting the low "<90%" warning almost continurally, causing me to reboot.
I guess I'll leave everything as is in Start Menu and continue merrily along.

    Arie,
Thanks for the excellent reference link. (several years ago, I had saved it and then forgot about it.
However, reviewing it again now, it seems that I was not doing anything wrong in my approach and in my attempt to resolve the low resources.

    Again, thank U all.

    Irv
