sandra - first off, welcome to the bbs.

To help out with this one, we are going to need more specific information. Then someone should be able to give you step-by-step instructions for getting things back to normal. I'm not sure if it will make a difference in this case if you are running XP-pro or XP-home but that is always a good thing to put in when you are asking about an XP problem because there are some things they do very differently.

First thing would be to copy down and post the exact, complete error message. That may be enough.

If not, XP maintains excellent logs of things that happen on the PC. Informational, warnings, errors with enough detail to allow a fix - at least usually that's the case. So what you would need to do is as follows:

    - if you have a My Computer icon on the desktop, right-click it. click manage, click the + sign by event viewer. You should see 3 event logs; application, security, system. Right-click on each and select "Clear All Events ". This way we get a clean start and you have less stuff to look thru.

    - if you don't have that icon, click the start button then settings~control panel~administrative tools and get to it that way.

    - reboot and do whatever it is that triggers the error.

    - back to the event viewer and look in both the system and applications sections for errors or warnings that happened at just that time.

    - the events will be written in some really strange computereze most of the time. But if you double click one to open it then click the icon below the up/down arrows, it will send a complete copy to your clipboard.

    - then back to this thread and paste the contents into a reply here. If you have several errors, put them all in here.

Not a nuisance at all and inexperience is very different than dense.

But you are still giving us the errors semi-pseudo-sorta the way they are showing up on your system. Exact and complete is a pain to do but it really helps.

Do you have system restore turned on? If so, do you have a restore point from before the error started? Or even better, if you happen to be running Norton Systemworks for virus protection and suchlike, you may also be running Go-Back. In either case, the easiest thing to try is a restore. May or may not fix the problem but certainly a place to start.
