I have a six-year-old computer with a reset button on the tower. This button is convenient because when a screen freezes up it is easier to press the reset button than to press ctrl. alt. and delete. I need to buy a new computer but the stores that I visited only sell computers that do not have reset buttons. If I buy a computer without a reset button how would I fix a frozen screen? Thank you very much.

To Steve R. Jones: Thank you for your message. But Microsoft says to safely turn off the computer, do not press the power button. Microsoft says click Start, Turn Off Computer, then click Turn Off. How do you respond to that? Thank you.

The majority of computers these days have a 'Soft Off' feature - press and hold the button in for shut down. Later bios's have the facility to set 'Instant Off' or 'Suspend' when pressing the power button. Things have moved on since MS made that statement :)

A PC without a reset button would be pretty lame. I use it quite often - especially when I'm overclocking my video card and it locks up.

If your lockup isn't too bad (limited to one misbehaving app), you can press the power button once and it will commence an orderly shutdown. But sometimes you can CTRL-ALT-DEL to take care of those - depends on the type of lockup. Most of my lockups are quite severe and the one-touch doesn't work. In that case I (and you can too) press and hold the power button and slowly count to 5. This will power your system down.

    A reset button is convenient.

When you press the reset button you aren't "safely" turning off the PC either. It's no different then using the power button except that the reset button restarts the puter, the power button shuts it down. Either way, it's what's considered an "improper" shutdown.

I am with MS all the way.

I think you may find a bit of difference between just pushing the power button and selecting Start/Shutdown.

Just pushing the power button does not give Windows itself a chance to do what it may need to.

I am into this becasue awhile back we had a bad storm and knocked the power off. I had all kinds of problems after the power came back. I have also had problems a couple of times when someone else used the power switch to shut down.

I have also watched and at times I see a lot of actvity as it is going down.

FWIW - if I briefly press the power button on my box Windows shuts down in the usual manner - that is, exactly the same as if you shut down via the Start menu or used the sequential key stroke combination of Windows Key, U, U.

If I press and hold the power button in the computer just stops.

Just what I was referring to in my above post. I call it a "soft-off ". As you said, it's the same as going Start>Shut down.....etc.

Mines the same but it wasn't originally. Mine would originally just shut off. Not proper in any way. I changed it in windows power management settings. Right click on the desktop>properties>screensaver. Click the power button and then click on the advanced tab. Where it says "when I press the power button on my computer" select whichever you prefer.

If memory serves me correctly, mine was set to do nothing. Apparently when it's set that way it's handled by the bios? In any event, it would just shut off. Changing it to shut down causes it to shut down just as it would using start>shutdown. If I press and hold it in for 4 seconds, it shuts off immediatly.
