I was having problems with an IP address conflict error on my laptop, so I was told on another forum, to reserve the IP addresses for both my laptop (wireless) and my desktop (wired), working from the D-link DIR-655. The desktop can still connect, but the laptop cannot. I have done this twice--reserve teh addresses, reboot the router, reboot computer, and no connection. I reset the router to factory conditions, then did it again--and still no connection.

What should I do? Should I just accept that the laptop IP cannot be reserved, and only have the DIR-655 reserve the desktop IP? Is there anythign else I can do?

Since I logged back into the router and had it reserve teh IP only for the desktop, I have not had that many of those error messages, but I have had a few. If there is a way to reserve teh IP for both systems, and still get online with both, I'd like to hear it. If not, I suppose I can live with this, given that now I'm getting fewer of these messages.

Laptop (wireless, XP). Desktop (wired, 7).

You should not have to reserve IP addresses for any comp on the network. Set the comps to use DHCP and get addresses automatically from the router or set one or both comps with a static IP address.

It sounds to me like your network may not be setup correc tly or else you have problems with the networking components/software on the comps which can be caused by incorrect settings or malware.

To t-shoot this problem start with:

    1. What type of Internet connection do you have (cable, dsl, etc) ?
    2. What brand & model modem.

Let's start with just the desktop for now. Unreserve the IP addresses. Shut off laptop completely. Reboot Desktop and open a command prompt. Use this command and copy+paste the result here.
    Code:
    ipconfig /all

    1. I have a cable internet (20 megs/sec)
    2. Motorola Surfboard 5101 feeding the cable signal into a D-Link wireless DIR-655 router.

Here is what that command got me:

    Looks good.

Access the router using your Web browser with this address: 192.168.0.1

Select "Admin" from dropdown menu. Default password is: blank, don't type one.

Access the DHCP Server Settings area and set the DHCP range to:
    192.168.0.100 - 192.169.0.50
(this allows nup to 50 dhcp addresses)

Set DHCP lease time to 24 hrs

    Checkmark these:
    Always broadcast
    Netbios announcement
    Netbios Mose: mixed

Primary & secondary WINS addresses: 0.0.0.0

    Disable DHCP Reservation

    Wifi:
    enabled
ssid: give a unique name like "psaulmnet "
use channel 1 or channel 11
    80211 mode: mixed
    visibility: visible

    Save settings and exit.

Start up laptop. Go to control panel > network > right click wifi adapter > select Properties > double click TCP/IP Internet Protocol > Advanced button > WINS tab > uncheck enable lmhosts > checkmark use netbios over tcpip. Repeat these steps on the desktop comp.

Reboot desktop. Reboot laptop and connect to wifi. If no joy, open the wifi connection software and remove all wlans previously connected to and then refresh the list of available wlans. Try connecting to yours again.

If all working OK, login to the router again and set an admin password.

    Tony, shouldn't it be 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.50 & in reverse order ie. 192.168.0.50 - 192.168.0.100 ?

As it is, I went into the router settings (per instructions above) and deleted the reserved IP addresses. Since then, all has been well--none of those IP conflict error messages.

    Great news!
Now, don't forget to set a password on the router.
