I've a minor problem with a USB device and read that if I opened the 'setupapi.log' file it might give me some clues. On opening the file there looked to be a lot of historical data so thought I would create a new, clean file. The MSDN.Microsoft.com instructions for resetting the file are quite simply 'Rename or Delete the file' so I deleted it then rebooted the PC.
This hasn't worked because now, when I try to Run 'setupapi.log' I get the message that file cannot be found. Fortunately the file I deleted was in recycle bin so restored it and just wiped the old text from it and rebooted again. Nope, that didn't work, I still have a blank sheet.
Anybody got any ideas on what I'm doing wrong or not doing right please ?.

See: How to enable verbose logging on a Windows XP-based computer

The setupapi.log is just a log file, so when no information is being logged, a new file won't be created (when you've deleted the old file).

Also, this is a setup log file, so you'd only find problems if you try to install a device; no information will be found in the file if you have any problems with a device that's already installed.

Many thanks Arie. The 'setupapi.log' file has now returned - I presume because I am still having problems with a USB device.
