    Hi Folks,

Anyone care to recommend replacement utilities for Scandisk and Defrag under Win98?

Why do I want these? I'm about to add an 80Gb and 160Gb HD to my system, and my understanding is that neither of these essential utilities support such large harddrives.

    Thanks in advance ;)

Hi Kencl - Welcome to the Board :)
I am a great fan of Diskeeper which runs in the background and automatically keeps your HD defragged. There is a 30 day free trial.

See this thread for some other options and links, including one to the Me defragger and DiskeeperLite - the freebie version of Diskeeper - manual operation only:

    kencl,

Welcome to the board! I have used Norton products for quite awhile on my Win98 systems. Never had a problem with them and they were much quicker then 98's defrag and scandisk. I have also heard that the Win ME version works pretty good.

To help keep down the use of and time of running of Scandisk and/or defrag.

Keep the C: drive to a minimum size required for the OS.. 6gig is plenty.

Before adding anything to the other partition(s) set the swap file to a minimum size of says 500meg and put it on the 2nd partition ( D: ) This will keep it in a FIXED spot. And if done first it will be at the front of the drive and will not move.

If it is not done first then if you do have Norton Utilities you can run it and haveit set the swap file to the front of the drive and it will stay there.

Then install everything possible ( other than OS related ) to a drive other than C:

With the HD partitioned and most stuff on other than C: VERY seldon will anything other than C: need defraging

I have XP on a 6gig C: drive. It takes longer to defrag it than the other 5 partitions put together.

Yes. ME Defrag does work much better in Win98.
