I have suddenly developed an error on my kids' computer with their games. When trying to start a game, I get the message:

c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Micosoft Windows Applications

I can fix the problem by expanding the config.nt , autoexec.nt , and Command.com files off of my XP CD. The problem is that after the machine is turned off, the error returns and I have to repeat the process. How do I get it to stay fixed?

Run this fix 16-bit subsystem file and it will do the repair that MS has described in the article Pete posted. It should stick once you execute this file.

    Thanks I fixed it

Thanks for your help. I had already tried the Microsoft web site fix -- that's where I got the info to expand the files from the CD. However I discovered that the problem was my son's turning off the computer by switching off the power switch instead of closing down windows properly. When I did that today, the fix stayed put. Thanks.
