What do I need to do in order to repartition my hard drive (80GB) from 3 logical drives to just 1? I thought that a simple reinstall of XP would allow me to do this. I did the reinstall but now I have two partitions: the original 20GB C: with lots of old stuff left over, and D: which is 60GB. As many of you are aware, Windows would not let me delete the primary partition. What I intended was to wipe the entire drive and start over as if I had installed a new hard drive.
At this point, I guess I have three options: one, keep what I have and install all programs on D:; two, buy another hard drive (they're certainly cheap enough); or three, continue to forge ahead with my original plan once I get some direction. I'm open to suggestions. I do have all critical data and programs backed up on a separate physical drive.

When booting the computer from the XP install CD, you should get the option to delete all partitions. I'm not sure how an extended partition is handled (an extended partition cannot be created from the install CD) so to be certain that you get rid of everything:

This assumes that the computer has a floppy drive. If not, either get one or stop reading.

Create a Win98SE startup disk by downloading and running this file by double-clicking it with a floppy in the drive. Next download and add DelPart to the floppy.

Make sure that the 80 GB hard disk is the only hard disk connected (prevents mistakes).

Boot the computer from the floppy and when up and running, at the A: command prompt type in: delpart.exe > enter.

DelPart will list all hard disks and partitions (you should only find the intended 80 GB). Have it delete all partitions (there is no way back) and when done, remove the floppy and insert the XP install CD.

Restart the computer and when booting from the CD, no partitions should be found. Have it create a single partition of all the space. The single partition should end up as C:.

Christer, thanks for your excellent advice. It worked and I have one big partition just as I wanted. I'll save the floppy disk for emergencies. :D
