Repair windows didn't work, tried sfc /scannow. Tried windows repair with windows cd. It finally got to where it would boot to safe mode or anything else. Reinstalled windows in a folder called window. I did this once before and got the origional windows working with all the setting, programs, etc.. Can't remember how this was done. Does anyone have an idea on doing this?

I don't know of many ways there would be to "get the original Windows working again ", unless repair programs like antivirus, antispyware, drive or file scanning were able to repair any damage to the original. You should be able to run those manually in safe mode.

If you can boot into safe mode and things are working correctly, you can use methods to stop services and drivers running in normal mode and isolate what is causing the problem.

What seems to be the problem with normal operation?

SFC /scannow means system file corruption. It may be related to Windows Updates, but these should be able to be rectified using System Restore. Check your HDD using Error Checking (chkdsk) and even the drive manufacturer's diagnostic utilities (the HDD model number will be listed in Device Manager).

For Windows XP, I don't find there are many reasons use a parallel install unless it is to backup before reformat.

    Thanks Pet C.
I think you have me back in bussiness. May have a few adjustments to make, but hopefully not many. IE7 was giving me trouble and I was trying to fix it when I lost the OS. IE is still not working, but mail is and the it looks like the rest of the computer may be recovered. I don't know what I'll do with/about IE, but it's not working at all now.
