    Hello all!

Now I've had too much time to think and as usual I can't finish it without Your support.

I have been told that installing SP1 on top, will be less clean than slipstreaming SP1 to the original CD and the same would be applicable to SP2.

Assuming that the above is true, would repairing an installation, using a CD with SP2 slipstreamed be cleaner than applying SP2 on top of it?

Would it be possible at all?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Christer,
I tried just applying the SP2 update and it really messed up my system so I did a repair install from a WinXP Pro SP2 slipstreamed CD and everything seems to be working OK now. I had to reinstall a couple of apps but thats about it. The repair feature didn't reset my system to default as I have many tweaks that were left alone.

    Christer,
I installed SP2 over the top. Seems fine. The difference will be a marginal, and, "if it works don't fix it" comes to mind.

The next reformat/clean install, I will run the slipstreamed version.

I think it comes down to, if it works for you, then go with running the update, as this is quicker. Any problems, and at the next clean install, then use/run the slipstreamed version. ;)

There is always that slight risk of catastrophe if you repair using an XP, SP1 or SP2 slipstreamed disc. If you can risk it then go for it. I doubt you will notice much improvement over just running the update if that is successful.

Rockit and others have had problems, the vast majority haven't. I'd chance it with the vast majority. :)

    Guys,
I will be ...... ...... either way since I will create a fresh Ghost Image prior to doing anything.

I have friends who don't have any system backup at all and the harddrive is in one single partition which puts all their user data in danger. The latter will be backed up on CDs/DVDs but the system ...... ...... well, I wouldn't trust System Destroy for a fraction of a second.

I am, on their behalf, trying to figure out which method will be the safest and will probably act as a guinea pig.

One thing that I am pretty sure of, is that tweaked services should be set back to the default. Some updates in the past have not installed correctly due to a service not being running and that makes installing SP2 on a system with tweaked services a risky business. Maybe I'm wrong but better safe than sorry!
