When you say "windows installer " are you refering to the installation of Windows or the " Windows installer" ( software installer ) that is within Windows which is in 98 and XP ?

If interpet correctly you are wanting to repair the installation of Windows XP.

I believe that is what charlesvar is refering to also.

I interpert Gasaline's first post as a problem with XP's software installer. If no joy with fixing with the references that PeteC gave in that first thread that I linked to, than a repair of XP's installation is what I think is called for.

I interpert Gasaline's first post as a problem with XP's software installer.

    I did not.

That still does not make it clear as to whether XP Operating System software or some Program software is being refered to.

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought immediately of the Windows Installer within Windows. Which I dealt with twice yesterday when installing new software on both 98 & XP.

Windows has become so damned complicated and confusing ( thanks to Microsoft ) that it is almost A MUST that we get letter by letter accuracy as to where you are at, how you got there, and/or what you wish to do while you are there.

If an install/repair of the OS is meant then that is what should be referd to. Not something such as " Windows Installer " which is also within Windows itself and is usually self-reparing. ( online now at that )

sorry, i guess that wasn't very clear.

windows XP has a service called "windows installer" that is responcible for the installation of third-party programs.

I believe mine to be curupt, however i understand that re-installing windows XP may repiar the WI.

so i did a soft install (upgrade) of WinXP. the upgrade worked, but the W.I. still will not let me instal/uninstall various programs.

I get an "Internal Error 2203.
    C:\WINDOWS\Installer\c44028e.ipi, -2147287035" when installing norton pro 2003

which i understand be mean access was denied to the .msi.
however i double checked all permissions and the admin group has full access to every folder on the C drive. as does the 'system' group.

    Hi Gasoline,

Glad you posted back to clear up what you meant.

Have you verified that XP's install service is turned on and running? Otherwise I'm at a loss to explain why its not working. The other possibility is that it is an issue around Admin privilages, something I'm not familiar with because I didn't set up multiple accounts and no passwords.

Another thought, you write that you did a "soft install (upgrade) ".
Not quite sure if this is the same as the repair option that I referenced in my previous post. Upgrades usually carry along problems.

Something else to try: install of some simple program and try that. It struck me that you're trying to install a program with a lot of components

    Regards - Charles

the service appears to function fine from the windows services properties.

I understood the repair function to be the equivilent of a re-install.

my winXP CD would not boot from the bios, (prob because it's an upgrade CD).

and the only options when i launched the setup were clean install / upgrade

    Hi Gasoline,

*my winXP CD would not boot from the bios, (prob because it's an upgrade CD).*

No, an upgrade is a full copy of the OS. To boot from the cd: go into the BIOS and see if boot from cd is enabled - should be 1st option. Later turn IDE-Disk boot as the primary boot option back on, or its usually the floppy that is the primary boot device.

However, booting from the cd isn't necessary . Choose the install option. Then follow the 2nd "R" press instructions. Back up your user data just in case you end up with a full install. Have seen people do that more than once.

    Regards - Charles
