I booted up this morning only to find a "registry file failure (hive corrupted)" and a dump of physical memory. I tried to use the RC feature but I believe I am having some problems with it. I could only use the chkdsk /r command at the C: prompt. I don't know if I am using the repair console or not. At this time I am using another computer. What options do I have at this time or how do I proceed so as not to lose any data on the affected computer?

See this post for recovering from a corrupt hive.

Thanks for the reply. Problem is after password line the prompt comes up C:\WINIT and when I type those commands it gives me an "access denied" message. I have gotten to the C: prompt and am performing a chkdsk /r now.

Did you notice my notice in that post?

For every command shown with the path C:\Windows you need to alter it to C:\WINNT (or C:\WINIT if that's what it actually is).

Right, should have read it more thoroughly. I will try after chkdsk completes. I have a large disk to check and it seems like its taking forever.

My problem still exists. I have gone through chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r and still have errors. Microsoft says that my Windows XP pro upgrade disk doesn't have enough tools on it to repair this type of problem. (hive file corrupted). They say a tech (geek squad) does. What tools are they referring to and are they available to the user? Is there anything else I can do here at home? I have another cpu . . . can I retrieve my data off the hard drive via this unit?

Did you go through the steps in the post I linked to for replacing the system hive? In your case, from the C:\WINNT> prompt, the commands would be as follows, hitting Enter after each line.

    md tmp
    copy c:\WINNT\system32\config\system c:\WINNT\tmp\system.bak
    delete c:\WINNT\system32\config\system
    copy c:\WINNT\repair\system c:\WINNT\system32\config\system

~Note: there is a space between each of the red letters above.
