Currently have DSL service with local phone company and router rental is about $5.00 per month. Router works well most of the time. Single individual with wireless capable laptop computer in home but I work in different rooms.

    1) should I continue to rent modem or buy my own?
    2) as a newbie, require easy to understand product - what is recommended?

$5 per month for router ? You must be joking. A new wireless router is available at around US $30 in India. Much cheaper to buy.

My last Netgear wireless modem only cost me about AU$150 & the Belkin N router I have now I think cost me less than AU$100 on eBay, both are easy to set up
Most of the ISP here in Australia include the Modem Router in the cost of their Broadband packages, so you end up owning it anyway
I would buy a modem that suits your needs & wireless type, but I would probably go for a N, as it is backward compatible with the earlier types

For the price of them I'd say own everytime (my supplier provides one free with the connection) but with the rental you do have some piece of mind, if you use your own router it's all too easy for your ISP to blame any issues on that rather than any service problems.

The question you have to ask yourself is this $5 / month a reasonable amount to pay for piece of mind?
