I once used to be able to rename my photos, but now if I try that it tells me that .. "if i change a filename extension, the file may become unusable..am I sure i want to change it. "

If I do change it.....that's it......I then can not open it any more.

Can anyone let me know if I can fix this problem?

Put the file extension back on the file.

A few of the most common extensions are .jpg .gif .bmp .tif

When you changed the file name you probably wiped out the 3 letter extension so it went from something like photo.jpg to picture

Just rename it to picture.jpg or whatever extension it was before.

    Hi jerry zarb
What file extensions are you trying to change? From what file to what? Or are you just taking a jpeg or gif and renaming it? For example: picture.jpeg to pics.jpeg?

Here's the problem Jerry, you don't have your View set so as to see the file extensions so when you rename a file, it trashes the extension and renames the file to one with NO extension.

What you need to do is change your view settings so as to be able to see all files and also view file extensions of files that are Registered. The whole magilla! You gotta see it all to get the right picture!

If you can't see the file extension, you're shooting in the dark as to how to rename it. If you are changing it from it's original extension, you'll get that arguement screen from Windows.

You can do nearly anything you want with the name that is before the DOT but after the DOT, leave it the same unless you know what for.

    Good luck.

In Windows 9x, go to MY COMPUTER > VIEW > OPTIONS > VIEW > and see that "Show All Files" and "Display the full Ms-Dos path in the title bar" are checked and the other boxes are NOT checked. Then OK out if you made changes.

Always run your computer in this mode since anything less is confusing and tends to create situations where errors can occur.
