One of the things that I did like about Vista, and there are not many, is that when renaming a file the filename would be highlighted, but the file extension would not. This means I could easily rename the file without changing the file extension.

With XP, when renaming a file, the entire filename is highlighted, including the file extension. This means that in order to rename the file I have to either retype the file extension, or move the cursor to before the file extension and then delete the filename before renaming.

Is there a way, in WinXP, to have the filename highlight without the file extension when renaming?

    Thank you.

Not that I know of - it's always been that way in XP and it's predecessors. Vista has clearly taken a small step forward.

I have never had a problem with renaming as you outlined ....
although I click immediately before the . and drag back to highlight the file name and retype.

Open Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > tag the box labeled "Hide extensions of known file types "

That's not perfect but gets most of what you're asking for. It does make it much easier to rename files without having to deal with the extensions.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

For now, I am doing the same thing... Drag my cursor over the filename before the dot.

I don't want to hide file extensions. I find them useful for many reasons. Thanks for the idea, though.
