    Hi EvilTwin
Have you been through msconfig's start up tab, and made sure that it was unchecked there as well?

Evil Twin There is a vbs script that will fix this problem. When you run it, it prevents Messenger from ever auto-starting. There is also an associated script that reverses the process. Get both here. From the home page there, select XP Tips and you'll find it listed about half way down the right hand column.

    Cheers. :)

I may be misunderstanding, too, but if you want to stop Messenger from starting up when you start up Outlook Express, go to Outlook Express>Tools>Options>General tab and uncheck "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger. "

You're understander is working just fine Miz , its just that even with all the right setting, it often doesn't work. That's why the VB script was developed, to work around the bug. I don't see any problem using the two scripts to control things until they develope a patch. It's as easy as placing them in the Quick Launch Bar. It executes faster than you can blink, and reversing it is equally fast. Personally, I don't care for Messenger and have uninstalled it completely.

Open Regedit, and go to this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

In the right pane, add a Dword value named 'Hide Messenger' and then Modify it's value data to '2'.
Reboot for it to take affect.
    This is what you want.

My registry tip was supposed to remove the functionality of MSN messenger from OE, hmmm interesting. It seems I made a small error, I had confused the value entries. I made the bad mistake of associating Dword with a String. They just aren't the same, it should be a Dword value, not a String. Sorry about that, and will correct my earlier post.

If what you want to do is stop Messenger from starting up when you open Outlook Express, in Outlook Express go to Tools>Options>General tab and uncheck "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger." Although it says "log on" what it means is "start up. "
