I would like to rename or delete some of the desktop background pictures collected under the 'desktop' tab in 'display properties'. I've tried everything but can't manage it. . When I right click on the relevant highlighted picture title to select a delete or rename function all I get is "what's this? ". Any help greatly appreciated.

DoPe - Welcome to the Board :)

You will find the files for the desktop pictures in the Windows folder, scroll down beyond all the folders to the files. They are bitmap files, *.bmp. You should recognise the names fron the Desktop tab in Display Properties.

Couple of other things to consider - if you've used any of your own pictures as a desktop background then everything in your My Documents -> My Pictures folder is going to show up there too. Quick way to eliminate anything in the standard group of backgrounds is to navigate to Windows\Web\Wallpaper and jump on your delete key once you're inside the folder.

    ;)

    Many thanks

Many thanks to PeteC and Rockster2U for having the patience to help a newcomer with a very insignificant and simple problem. :) Your advice worked, I was able to delete/rename all pictures in desktop (with the exception of one that I downloaded from the web which was named by the background dropdown as 'Internet explorer wallpaper... I couldn't find it).

    cheers,

The Internet Explorer wallpaper is located in Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer. It's put there when you right click on a picture in Internet Explorer and choose "set as background ". If you set your wallpaper again in this manner and it's a different picture than the original, the original will be overwritten by the new one. When you download wallpaper from the web you can avoid this. Instead choosing set as background when you right click the picture, choose "save picture as" instead. You'll then get the save as window and you'll have the opportuinty to name it whatever you want and save it wherever you want. If you save it in your "my pictures" folder it'll show up in the display applet when you want to change the wallpaper.
